George Soros Boosts Newsom’s Redistricting Effort with $10M Donation

Democratic financier George Soros has donated $10 million to support Governor Gavin Newsom’s campaign for Proposition 50, a ballot measure aimed at redrawing the state’s congressional district boundaries. This contribution makes Soros the largest single donor to the campaign, which has raised approximately $70 million in less than two months. The measure seeks to counteract recent redistricting efforts in Texas that favor Republicans and could potentially create five new Democratic seats in California.

Governor Newsom has positioned Proposition 50 as a response to President Donald Trump’s attempts to increase Republican representation in Congress. According to The New York Times, the fight over redistricting is expected to cost over $200 million. The measure’s opponents, led by Charles T. Munger Jr., have already spent more than $30 million to stop it.

President Trump has criticized Soros, accusing him of instigating protests and threatening legal action against him. In contrast, Soros’s donation is part of his ongoing support for progressive causes in California, including efforts to protect Newsom from a recall in 2021 and to elect reform-minded prosecutors.

The campaign for Proposition 50 has attracted significant support from labor unions and Democratic political action committees. As reported by Politico, Soros’s contribution is expected to intensify the partisan battle over the measure, which will be decided by California voters in November.
