Garden Grove Bans Alcohol Ads Near Schools, Playgrounds

Garden Grove City Council has unanimously passed an ordinance prohibiting outdoor advertisements of alcoholic beverages within 500 feet of schools, playgrounds, child care facilities, and libraries. The decision, made on August 12, was spearheaded by Councilwoman Yesenia Muñeton, who emphasized the need to protect the community’s children. “I want to assure that our students and our children and the community are safe,” Muñeton stated during the council meeting.

The ordinance follows an incident where an alcoholic beverage company painted a mural advertising their product across from a local elementary school. This prompted concerns about the influence of alcohol marketing on young people. According to Voice of OC, studies by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism indicate that exposure to alcohol marketing can lead to increased underage drinking, which is associated with various risks such as accidents, assaults, and long-term alcohol issues.

Councilman George Brietigam praised Muñeton for her initiative, stating, “It was good that you could bring that focus to this council and provide some effective change in our city that will be positive for future generations.”

The ordinance aims to create a safer environment for children and is expected to take effect soon, marking a significant step in Garden Grove’s efforts to curb underage drinking and its associated risks.
