GameStop Closing ‘Significant Number’ Of Locations In 2026

GameStop, the once-dominant video game retailer, is continuing to close stores across the United States as part of its ongoing effort to adapt to the changing retail landscape. In fiscal 2024, the company closed 590 stores nationwide and plans to shutter a “significant number of additional stores” in fiscal 2025, which ends in January 2026.

According to Fast Company, the closures are part of a “store portfolio optimization review” aimed at reducing costs and adjusting to the shift towards digital gaming. The company’s third-quarter earnings report revealed a net income of $77 million on revenue of $821 million, which was below analyst expectations. GameStop’s stock has declined approximately 36% over the past year.

The retailer has not released a list of the stores set to close, but local media and social media posts indicate closures in states such as Maine, Michigan, and Kansas. As of the beginning of last year, GameStop operated 2,325 stores in the United States.

The company, which gained notoriety during the 2021 meme stock frenzy, continues to face challenges as it navigates the evolving retail environment. The closures are expected to continue into 2026 as GameStop seeks to streamline its operations and focus on digital growth.
