Frozen pizzas sold at Walmart and Aldi are being recalled nationwide after concerns that some products may be contaminated with salmonella. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert on Tuesday (April 30), urging consumers not to eat certain meat and poultry products containing dairy ingredients that may be unsafe, even if cooked thoroughly.
According to the alert, the recall affects several popular items, including Great Value Thin Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza and Great Value Stuffed Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza sold at Walmart, as well as Mama Cozzi’s Biscuit Crust Sausage & Cheese Breakfast Pizza and Mama Cozzi’s Biscuit Crust Cooked Pork Belly Crumbles, Cooked Bacon Topping, Pepper & Onion Breakfast Pizza sold at Aldi. Other recalled products include Culinary Circle Ultra Thin Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza and Pork King Good Sour Cream & Onion Pork Rinds. The full list can be found here.
The concern stems from dry milk powder used in these items, which was found to be potentially contaminated with salmonella. No illnesses have been reported so far, but officials advise customers to throw away the recalled products or return them for a refund.
Symptoms of salmonella infection may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, and loss of appetite, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The elderly, infants, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness. Anyone who believes they have consumed the affected products and feels sick should contact a healthcare provider.
A Walmart spokesperson stated, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. We have issued a sales restriction and removed this product from our impacted stores. We are working with the supplier to investigate.” Aldi and other brands involved are also working with authorities regarding the recall.
Officials emphasize that recalled products should not be eaten under any circumstances, even if fully cooked. More information on affected products and next steps can be found through the FSIS recall notice.
