Legendary USC Trojans and former NFL head coach John Robinson has died at the age of 89, the USC football team announced on its X account Monday (November 11).
“John Robinson, one of USC’s most popular and successful football coaches, died today (Monday, Nov. 11) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana of complications from pneumonia. He was 89. #FightOnForever,” the team said.
Robinson, a College Football Hall of Famer, had three stints with the Trojans, initially joining the program as an offensive coordinator in 1972 for three seasons and later as a head coach from 1976 to 1982 and again from 1993 to 1997, compiling a 104-35-4 (63-23-3) record. The Chicago native led the Trojans to the 1978 national championship, as well as five conference titles and four Rose Bowl championships as a head coach.
Robinson also won three national titles as an assistant coach, including two as USC’s offensive coordinator in 1972 and 1974 and with LSU as a senior consultant in 2019. Robinson worked as the head coach for the Los Angeles Rams from 1983 to 1991, going 75-68 and making six playoff appearances in nine years.
Robinson’s final stint as a head coach came at UNLV from 1999 to 2004, compiling a 28-42 (14-28 Mountain West Conference) record.
