Jessica Aber, who served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia during former President Joe Biden‘s administration, has died at the age of 43, ABC News reports.
Aber was dead inside her Alexandria, Virginia, home at around 9:18 a.m. after police received a report of an unresponsive woman, according to a statement from the Alexandria Police Department.
“This morning, at approximately 9:18 a.m., Alexandria Police responded to the 900 block of Beverly Drive for the report of an. unresponsive woman,” the department said. “Officers located a deceased woman. Following notification of family members, the Alexandria Police Department can confirm the identity of the woman as Ms. Jessica Aber, age 43, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
“As a matter of protocol, an investigation is underway surrounding the circumstances of her death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia will determine the cause and manner of death.”
Aber served as the U.S. attorney for Virginia for the majority of Biden’s administration, having been sworn in unanimously by the Senate and taking office in October 2021, before resigning shortly after President Donald Trump‘s inauguration in January. Aber oversaw a staff of about 300 prosecutors and others while serving her role, having previously worked for the Department of Justice as an assistant U.S. attorney, prosecuting financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime and child exploitation cases, her online biography states.
“We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague, U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber,” Current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Erik Siebert said in a statement. “She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being. We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all too brief time in this world.”
