Former Super Bowl Champion Calvin Jones Dead At 54

Former Super Bowl champion and University of Nebraska standout running back Calvin Jones has died at the age of 54, the Nebraska football team revealed in a post shared on its X account Thursday (January 23).

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Husker legend and Super Bowl Champion, Calvin Jones. Our hearts go out to the Jones family and he will be greatly missed,” the post states.

Jones was reportedly found dead at his home in Omaha, where a close family friend told KETV that he’d experienced problems with his furnace and had to use a generator because his home was cold. The Omaha Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene where there was reported to be an odor of gas, according to a police report.

The Omaha Police Department suspects Jones was likely killed by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Jones, a native of Omaha, was a member of the “We Back” backfield at the University of Nebraska, where he recorded 3,166 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns as the 1992 Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year, a two-time Big Eight selection in 1992 and 1993 and a second-team Big Eight selection in 1991.

Jones was selected by the then-Las Vegas Raiders at No. 80 overall in the third-round of the 1994 NFL Draft and played for the franchise for his two seasons and was a member of the Green Bay Packers‘ Super Bowl XXXI team, though he didn’t register a statistic.
