Former NFL running back and high school All-American Benjamin Gay died at the age of 44 last month following a car accident in Colorado, according to a Legacy.com obituary published on Friday (August 2) (h/t the New York Post).
Gay recorded 172 yards and one touchdown on 51 rushing attempts, as well as four receptions and three tackles, during his lone NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns in 2001, having previously appeared in a preseason game for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League in 2000 and spending part of training camp with the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the 2002 season before being released. The Houston native was selected as a USA TODAY All-American following his senior season at Spring High School and signed with Baylor over offers from Florida, Florida State and Miami, but was kicked off the team five weeks into his freshman season due to rules violations.
Gay later enrolled at Garden City Community College and recorded 1,442 yards and 17 touchdowns in nine games during the 1999 season, but was eventually dismissed from the team due to his grades and rules violations. The former football player was reported to have worked as a welder following the conclusion of his playing career, a profession he continued until his death, according to his Legacy.com obituary.
