United Airlines Flight 32 made an emergency landing at Kansai International Airport in Japan on Friday (September 12) after a cockpit warning light indicated a potential fire in the cargo hold. The flight, a Boeing 737-800, was en route from Narita, Japan, to Cebu, the Philippines, when it turned back to Japan approximately 50 minutes into the flight.
According to Newsweek, the plane landed safely around 7 p.m. local time, and passengers evacuated using emergency slides. There were 135 passengers and seven crew members on board. Two passengers were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.
United Airlines stated, “Upon initial inspection by maintenance, there is no indication a fire occurred.” Despite the fire alert, emergency crews and fire trucks met the aircraft on the runway, but no visible damage was found on the plane’s exterior.
The incident led to the temporary closure of both runways at Kansai airport for safety checks. The cause of the fire warning remains unclear. Passengers described the evacuation as unsettling but orderly.
United Airlines, headquartered in Chicago, is one of the largest air travel providers worldwide. In recent years, the airline has faced several operational challenges, including a computer system failure in August that led to widespread delays and cancellations.
