Five Dead in San Diego Islamic Center Shooting

A tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday has left five people dead.

The incident unfolded around noon when police responded to reports of an active shooter at the mosque, located about nine miles north of downtown San Diego.

According to KSAT, three adults at the Islamic center were killed, one of which was a security guard. The two suspects involved in the shooting have also been confirmed dead, and believed to have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, reports say they were teens.

The Islamic Center, known as the largest mosque in San Diego County, was surrounded by a heavy police presence as officers worked to secure the area and escort children to safety.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s office has been briefed on the situation, and he expressed gratitude to the first responders for their efforts in protecting the community. In a statement on the social platform X, his office urged residents to follow guidance from local authorities.

The Islamic Center’s mission is to serve both the Muslim population and the larger community through educational and social initiatives. The center includes the Al Rashid School, offering courses in Arabic language, Islamic studies, and the Quran.

WSBT reported that aerial footage showed a significant law enforcement response, with dozens of police vehicles surrounding the mosque and nearby streets. Officers were seen carrying rifles near the mosque’s school area.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details about the suspects or the motive behind the attack.
