San Bernardino County firefighters successfully rescued dozens of stranded attendees at the YMCA Camp Whittle in Fawnskin on Thursday using a snowcat vehicle. The rescue operation took place as a storm approached the area, leaving nearly 300 camp attendees to flee on foot through the snow to reach transportation.
The conference attendees found themselves in a precarious situation as provisions had run out following the conclusion of the event. Firefighters from Station 96 in Fawnskin responded by employing their snowcat to evacuate the remaining individuals who were unable to leave on foot. According to ABC7, the evacuees were transported to waiting buses nearby, ensuring their safety before the storm hit.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the evacuation. The quick response and specialized equipment of the Mountain Division were crucial in addressing the snow-related emergency. As reported by KYMA, the firefighters’ efforts were met with gratitude from those rescued.
