Journalist Sue Pascoe is investigating the distribution of $100 million raised during the FireAid concert, questioning whether funds are reaching wildfire victims directly. The concert, held at venues like Intuit Dome and Kia Forum in Inglewood, featured artists such as Billie Eilish and Katy Perry. Despite the substantial amount raised, many victims of the Eaton and Palisades fires, including those uninsured or underinsured, report receiving no direct assistance.
FireAid, a newly formed 501c3, partners with local nonprofits to deliver aid. According to FOX 11, the funds are distributed in phases, supporting initiatives like housing stability, mental health services, and community infrastructure, with no administrative costs deducted. The first phase distributed $50 million to over 120 nonprofits, while the second phase allocated $25 million for long-term recovery efforts.
Pascoe’s investigation revealed that the Annenberg Foundation manages the funds, which are not intended for direct payments to individuals. She reached out to Chris Wallace, the Los Angeles Clippers’ communication chief, who confirmed that the funds were set aside for community support. However, Digital Music News reports that some organizations receiving grants do not work directly with the hardest-hit neighborhoods.
Local councils and activists are now demanding a transparent accounting of FireAid’s spending. Some residents are calling on the California Attorney General to investigate potential charitable misrepresentations or breaches of donor intent.
