SANTA ANA (CNS) – A man was killed in a blaze in a Santa Ana apartment Thursday.
Orange County Fire Authority firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at 3:15 a.m. in the 1200 block of East Borchard Avenue, according to OCFA Capt. Steve Concialdi.
Residents in the second-story apartments reported there might be a resident downstairs who was still in the complex, so firefighters “made an aggressive attack and knocked it down in five minutes,” Concialdi said.
But the firefighters found the victim, who has not yet been identified, Concialdi said.
Firefighters are concerned that there may not have been a working smoke alarm in the apartment, Concialdi said.
“Everybody, no matter where they live, should be sure they have working smoke alarms,” Concialdi said. “Those give crucial seconds to alert occupants of smoke and fire in a home and apartment and those extra seconds to get out alive should be in every bedroom and hall leading to every bedroom.”
The fire’s cause remained under investigation. Everyone else in the apartments got out safely, Concialdi said.
The fire caused $500,000 in damage to the building and $50,000 to its contents, Concialdi said.
