Fire Damages World Famous Magic Castle in Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD (CNS) – Roof work on the building that houses the Magic Castle in Hollywood has been identified as a possible cause of the fire at the renowned performance venue, restaurant and clubhouse frequented by magicians, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported Wednesday.

Firefighters responded around 5:28 p.m. Tuesday to the world-famous home of the Academy of Magical Arts, located at 7001 W. Franklin Ave., where flames were reported in the attic.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz said first- arriving crews operated in an offensive mode, coordinating roof ventilation, fire suppression and salvage operations on the third floor.

A total of 68 firefighters knocked down the fire in 41 minutes and no injuries were reported, Lantz said.

The extent of damage to the building was not immediately known.

KTLA5 reported that employees told firefighters construction workers had been on the roof using blow torches to melt rubber roofing material, which may have been related to the fire.

Firefighters were continuing salvage and smoke removal operations, and will remain at the scene for full overhaul of the fire damage, the LAFD said.
