Democratic Sen. John Fetterman claims his party “lost the plot” when then-nominee, former Vice President Kamala Harris, began calling President Donald Trump a fascist in public.
“When Vice President Harris referred to President Trump as a ‘fascist’… I knew absolutely we lost the plot at that point,” Fetterman said during an appearance on FOX News‘ live broadcast of Hannity on Wednesday (October 22) night. “If you call the president or someone like a fascist, you are effectively calling the people who are going to vote for him… then they must be fascist too… or they support fascism and those things. And that is just not true.”
Fetterman continued to criticize Harris and other Democrats after being asked about echoed comparisons made between Trump and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
“I don’t know why — and I have always refused to say that,” Fetterman said.
The senator then claimed that spewing hatred encouraged violence, referencing the assassination of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk in September.
“I refuse to do those kinds of things because that kind of extreme kinds of rhetoric makes it easier for those kinds of extreme kinds of actions — even like what happened to poor Charlie Kirk,” he said.
“I happen to know and love a lot of people that voted for the president and they are not fascist, they are not Nazis, they’re not trying to destroy the constitution and all those things,” Fetterman added. “They just happen to have different priorities and they love our country in the same ways that Democrats do as well.”
Fetterman, who had previously served as the mayor of Braddock from 2006 to 2019 and lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania from 2019 to 2023, has been outspoken about the Democratic Party and softened his approach to Trump in recent months, which has led to reports of the party maneuvering to have top officials within his state run against him, according to Axios.
