Federal Agents Execute 30 Raids Targeting Mexican Mafia In SoCal

Federal and local law enforcement officers executed a sweeping operation Thursday targeting alleged members and associates of the Mexican Mafia across Southern California, with the majority of raids concentrated in Orange County.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed that search and arrest warrants were being served at 30 locations throughout the region. According to ABC7, approximately 40 individuals have been indicted in the case, with about 10 already in custody prior to Thursday’s operation.

The coordinated dawn raids involved federal agents from the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice, supported by local police departments. Officers were observed taking at least two people into custody at a home in Lakewood, while additional raids took place in Santa Ana and Anaheim.

“We have indicted about 40 individuals in this case,” Essayli told reporters while on scene. “About 10 of them are already in custody. A lot of them operate from within custody. The other 30 or so we’re arresting Thursday morning.”

Fox LA reported that the operation dealt a significant blow to the Mexican Mafia’s regional operations, with a major hub centered in Lakewood neighborhoods near the 605 Freeway. The Mexican Mafia, also known as “La Eme,” is a powerful prison-based syndicate that controls street-level gang activity and illicit drug trade throughout Southern California.

Essayli indicated that most suspects face charges related to drug distribution. He emphasized that the gang’s primary focus of operations is Orange County, where it allegedly exerts control over nearly all Hispanic street gangs in the region.

According to New Santa Ana, residents across Santa Ana woke to sirens and low-flying helicopters as hundreds of officers executed the pre-dawn operation. The Mexican Mafia has long operated as a “criminal government” from within the prison system, enforcing “taxes” on local street crews and directing violent punishments for those who resist.

Officials scheduled a press conference for 9 a.m. Thursday at the Santa Ana Federal Building to release additional details about the raids and the specific charges filed against the suspects.
