Federal agents were seen blocking roads near farms in the Somis area of Ventura County on Thursday morning. The presence of the agents prompted local residents to confront them as they blocked roads near Greentree Drive and Bradley Road. According to Eyewitness News, several immigrant rights activists arrived at the scene. Activist Jorge Rios stated, “No reports of anybody being taken,” indicating that the agents did not detain anyone during the operation.
Local resident Herlanda Cobos expressed her fear, stating, “I’ve lived up here for 22, 23 years, and being afraid that I could easily get taken into custody because I’m a Latina.” She added that as a former farm worker, she empathizes with the immigrant farmers’ fear.
This incident follows a recent Supreme Court decision that cleared the way for federal agents to conduct sweeping immigration operations in Los Angeles, marking a victory for President Donald Trump’s administration. The operation in Somis is not the first of its kind in Ventura County. In July, a similar enforcement operation at Glass House Farms near Camarillo led to a clash with demonstrators.
