Federal agents have launched immigration enforcement operations in New Orleans and Minneapolis, following President Donald Trump‘s announcement of sending National Guard troops to Louisiana. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the New Orleans operation, named “Operation Catahoula Crunch,” targets “criminal aliens” released due to sanctuary policies that prevent local authorities from honoring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized that the operation aims to remove individuals involved in serious crimes such as home invasion, armed robbery, and rape. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry supports the federal intervention, citing a significant drop in crime in the state. However, the operation has sparked fear among the immigrant community, with many staying home to avoid potential detention.
In Minneapolis, the operation focuses on undocumented Somali immigrants, amid heightened tensions following President Trump’s remarks against the Somali community. Trump criticized Minnesota’s Somali population, stating they should “go back to where they came from.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and local officials have defended the Somali community, emphasizing their importance to the city.
The operations in both cities are part of a broader crackdown on immigration under the Trump administration, which has included similar actions in Los Angeles, Chicago, and other cities. The administration has also paused immigration applications from 19 countries, including Somalia.
