FBI Trying To Take Over Nancy Guthrie Case Amid Sheriff Criticism: Report

The FBI is reportedly desperate to take over the search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of TODAY Show anchor Savannah Guthrie, amid accusations that it has been doomed due to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos‘ ego and vendetta against the federal agency, the New York Post reports.

Nanos has been accused of several missteps during the high-profile case, including leaving Guthrie’s house unguarded hours after her disappearance and leading an investigation that has no clear suspects nor strong leads two weeks after being launched. The FBI is reportedly desperate to take over the case, but cannot unless the Guthrie family specifically requests for it to do so, multiple law enforcement sources confirmed to the New York Post.

“It is a common belief in this agency that this case has become an ego case for Sheriff Nanos,” said Sgt. Aaron Cross, president of the Pima County Deputies Organization.

The report came hours after a latex glove found near the scene rendered no DNA matches, with a source telling the New York Post authorities “were never confident in the glove.”

“The press conferences are not going well. Giving press conferences without saying anything. It’s not helpful,” the source added.

Savannah Guthrie made a plea to her mother’s alleged kidnapper, claiming “it’s never too late” to “do the right thing” in a video shared two weeks after she went missing on Sunday (February 15).

“I wanted to come on … it’s been two weeks since our mom was taken and … I just wanted to come on and say that we still have hope and we still believe,” Savannah said with tears in her eyes. “And I wanted to say that to whoever has her or knows where she is, that it’s never too late. And you’re not lost or alone, and it is never too late to do the right thing.”
