The FBI and the Maui Police Department are advising the public to be vigilant after several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were discovered.
Officials began their investigation after an explosion on Old Haleakala Highway on August 8 destroyed an SUV, sending the driver to hospital. Investigators recovered an IED from a nearby trash can and said it was responsible for the blast.
Since then, the FBI and local police have located several other IEDs hidden in trash cans along roadways between Kahului and Kula. Bomb technicians recovered the explosive devices and rendered them safe.
Authorities are urging the public to be vigilant and, if they see something out of place, to contact law enforcement immediately.
“If you see a suspicious or unknown object, especially near any street or road, do not touch, drive over, or go near it for any reason. If possible, keep others away from the area and call 911 immediately,” the FBI said in a press release.
Investigators are trying to track down who is responsible for building and placing the bombs. They are also trying to determine how they are detonated.
