Fate Of Ex-‘Teacher Of The Year’ Who Admitting To Abusing Teen Determined

Former ‘Teacher of the Year’ Brandyn Martin Hargrove was sentenced to 10 years of probation and a 10-year probated sentence, avoiding jail time despite admitting to having a relationship with a female student that began when the victim was 15, the New York Post reports.

The victim, who is now in her 30s, told police that she was sexually assaulted by her teacher nearly two decades earlier, which included being groomed as a student and having a sexual relationship that continued until she was 17, Clute Chief of Police James Fitch told ABC 13.

“In 2006, you did not have the charge of improper relationship with a student that we have today, so that’s why you got the charges of sex assault and indecency of a child,” Chief Fitch said.

“The DA’s office did include the victim. They talked to the victim before this plea agreement was accepted, and from what I understand, the victim spoke in court [Wednesday] morning,” he added.

Hargrove was convicted of sexual assault and indecency of a child for the incidents, which were 10 second-degree felonies and two third-degree felonies. The 10 second-degree felonies typically result in a punishment of two to 20 years in prison, while the two third-degree felonies result in two to 10 years in prison.
