A coalition of community groups announced plans for a farmworker labor strike in California this week to protest the Trump administration’s ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigration. The strike, set to occur from Wednesday to Friday, aims to highlight the essential role of farmworkers in the food system.
Flor Martinez Zaragoza, a social media influencer with over 500,000 followers on Instagram, spoke at a news conference on Los Angeles’ historic Olvera Street. She emphasized the importance of farmworkers, stating, “We are not machines. We are not criminals. We are the backbone of our food system, and we are tired of being treated as disposable.”
The strike seeks to draw attention to the challenges faced by undocumented farmworkers, who play a critical role in agriculture but often face harsh working conditions and uncertain futures due to immigration policies. As the protest approaches, organizers hope to garner support and bring awareness to the plight of these essential workers.
