A charter boat explosion near Miami’s Haulover Sandbar left 11 people hospitalized with burns and other injuries on Saturday (May 9), according to emergency officials. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue agency responded to the incident in Biscayne Bay just before 1 p.m., designating it a Level 2 Mass Casualty Incident as dozens of rescue units arrived at the scene.
Of the injured, at least one child suffered burns on 18% of their body, and an adult sustained burns over 30% of his body, according to the Miami Herald.
According to preliminary information from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the explosion occurred while the 40-foot Press Cruiser 400 Express, called Nauti Nabor, was near the popular sandbar, a well-known gathering spot for boaters and tourists.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission assisted with the emergency response and are investigating the cause of the explosion. The damaged vessel was removed from the sandbar later that evening. Authorities have not released further details about the medical conditions of those hospitalized, and the cause remains under investigation.
