A former U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $19,000 from international passengers. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida said that 43-year-old William Timothy stole money while performing currency verification at Naples Airport in Florida.
Investigators uncovered 17 incidents between mid-2023 and early-2024 in which Timothy stole money from international passengers arriving at the airport. He managed to steal $18,700 from 18 passengers before he was busted.
“Evidence collected during the investigation showed that Timothy was surreptitiously stealing cash from arriving international passengers during border enforcement examinations and currency verifications performed as part of his official duties as an assigned CBP Officer at Naples Airport,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, Timothy pleaded guilty to one count of officer or employee of the United States converting property of another and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
