Former Appalachian State head coach and current UCF offensive line coach Shawn Clark died Sunday (September 21) at the age of 50, UCF Athletics announced in a news release on Monday (September 22).
Clark died at an Orlando hospital where he was initially admitted last Tuesday (September 9) after suffering a medical emergency. The veteran coach was reported to be in stable condition before dying “unexpectedly” Sunday night.
“Shawn was so much more than a coach. He was a remarkable man, husband, and father who cared deeply about his players and staff,” said UCF head coach Scott Frost. “The reaction of our players and coaches to the news this morning is a testament to Shawn’s character and the impact he had on every life that he touched. He was loved. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Jonelle, and children, Giana and Braxton. We are here to support them and will continue to keep them in our hearts and prayers.”
Clark joined Frost’s staff upon his return to UCF this past December. The West Virginia native went 40-24 during five seasons as Appalachian State’s head coach, which included two Sun Belt Championship Game appearances in 2021 and 2023. The former offensive lineman had previously as a co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach from 2016 to 2018 and assistant head coach/offensive line coach for the Mountaineers before taking over and leading App State to a new Orleans Bowl victory against UAB in December 2019.
