Guests at the Parkwest Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens were evacuated on Thursday due to a hoax call.
The Bell Gardens Police Department reported that the call falsely claimed an individual armed with an assault rifle had entered the property. This prompted a significant police response, including the deployment of SWAT teams and armored vehicles.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert, closing the northbound lanes of the 710 Freeway at Florence Avenue. Traffic on Florence Avenue became heavily congested, and Eastern Avenue in front of the casino was shut down to vehicles. According to FOX LA, large crowds of customers and casino employees gathered in a nearby shopping center parking lot as police investigated.
The incident, which began around 6:15 p.m., was resolved by 10 p.m. when law enforcement began clearing the scene. However, the SigAlert on the freeway remained in place. Yahoo News reported that the hoax call led to the evacuation and significant police presence, including multiple law enforcement agencies.
