Garlic sold at Tops Friendly Markets has been recalled due to improper storage temperatures that could result in deadly health concerns.
The Class I recall issued on Tuesday (March 24) affects 6-ounce bags of Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic with UPC 00007457410852 code dates, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. The garlic is required to be stored between 32 and 37 degrees Fahrenheit and the store’s open-air coolers are incapable of maintaining that range can lead to the growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria.
Clostridium botulinum bacteria causes botulism, which is a rare, life-threatening paralytic illness that results in muscle weakness, double vision and breathing failure. Recovery for botulism can take months as it requires antitoxin and often weeks of ventilation.
Tops Friendly Markets reportedly sold the items in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont. A Class I recall is considered to be the most serious category, with consumption of the items resulting in possible health problems or even death and the garlic stored at improper temperatures.
Tops Friendly Markets has removed the affected product from its shelves and implemented a system to block sales of the recalled garlic from being purchased at checkout. Customers who purchased the product are eligible for a full refund with proof of purchase.
