Elon Musk Says SpaceX To Shift Focus To Building A City On The Moon

Elon Musk announced Sunday that SpaceX is changing its priorities, focusing on building a “self-growing city” on the moon within the next decade before pursuing its Mars ambitions.

“The mission of SpaceX remains the same: extend consciousness and life as we know it to the stars,” Musk wrote in a post on his social media platform X. The billionaire entrepreneur explained that while the company still intends to begin work on a Mars city within five to seven years, “the overriding priority is securing the future of civilization and the Moon is faster.”

This strategic shift represents a significant change for SpaceX, which Musk has long positioned as humanity’s ticket to Mars colonization. The company’s massive Starship rocket system has been under development specifically with Mars missions in mind, though its progress has been slower than initially projected.

SpaceX’s pivot aligns with NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface. The company is already contracted to provide a Starship-based lunar lander for NASA’s Artemis III mission, now scheduled for no earlier than 2028.

Several factors may have influenced this change in direction. The development of Starship has faced challenges, with multiple test flights experiencing catastrophic failures in recent years. Additionally, SpaceX recently merged with Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI and announced plans to launch a million orbital data centers.

In a February blog post, Musk suggested that these data centers, combined with Starship capabilities, could eventually lead to manufacturing and launching satellites directly from the lunar surface. This commercial potential may make the moon a more attractive near-term target than Mars.

The moon-first approach also offers practical advantages. Its proximity to Earth makes it more accessible for regular resupply missions and emergency returns. The lunar environment, while harsh, presents fewer challenges than the Martian surface in terms of radiation, temperature extremes, and atmospheric conditions.

Despite this shift, Mars remains in SpaceX’s long-term vision. Musk has previously set ambitious timelines for Mars missions, including a 2025 projection for sending five uncrewed Starships to the red planet as reported by Scientific American. Those plans appear to be on hold as the company refocuses its immediate efforts on lunar development.

Industry observers note that a lunar base could serve as a proving ground for technologies and systems needed for eventual Mars colonization, potentially making the longer journey more feasible in the future.
