A Florida elementary school principal once named ‘teacher of the year’ and another teacher from her school were arrested in relation to a wild party where 100 underage juveniles allegedly consumed alcohol.
Roosevelt Elementary School principal Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan and third-grade teacher Karly Anderson were both charged with child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, while Hill-Brodigan received an additional charge for violating open house party liquor laws as the incident took place at her Cocoa Beach home, Florida Today reported. Several minors were drinking alcohol they got from coolers inside the home including one individual who suffered a medical emergency stemming from drinking, WJXT reported.
The principal reportedly turned all the outside lights off and ran into her home when EMS arrived at the scene to treat the teenager, which caused first responders to use auxiliary lighting on their vehicles, according to a police report. Another teenager was charged with driving under the influence near the scene.
Anderson was described as being intoxicated when she approached responding officers and identified herself as a teacher at the party, according to the police report obtained by WJXT. Brevard Public Schools told WJXT that both Hill-Brodigan and Anderson, who have since posted bond, were placed on administrative leave for now following their arrests.
“We are extremely troubled by these accusations and are fully cooperating with the Cocoa Beach Police Department. Our commitment to student safety remains our top priority,” the district said.
Hill-Brodigan has worked for the district in various roles for the past 23 years, having previously won the award for Teacher of the Year and served as an assistant principal at two elementary schools, according to her bio.
