At least 28 people were injured after a driver plowed through a workers’ demonstration in Munch Thursday (February 13) morning ahead of Vice President JD Vance and other world leaders’ scheduled visit to the city, NBC News reports.
The driver was identified as a 24-year-old Afghanistan nationalist who is suspected of driving into a crowd of people in the area of the roads Dachauer Straße and Seidlstraße just after 10:30 a.m. local time as part of a “suspected attack,” a police spokesperson told reporters via Sky News. Authorities said the driver was “secured” and there was no suspected additional threat to the area.
Two people were reported to have suffered serious injuries. A heavy police presence was reported at the scene.
A strike was being held by trade union Verdi requesting pay increases, higher bonuses and more days off, according to Sky News. Witnesses at the scene believe the driver intentionally drove into the protesters.
“I went with the demonstration,” one witness told BR24, a German outlet. “I saw that a man was lying under the car. Then I tried to open the door, but it was locked.”
Vance is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the 61st Munich Security Conference, which hosts world leaders for discussions on global security policy changes and will be held Friday (February 14) to Sunday (February 16).
“There was no protective impact to the VP but we are monitoring that incident closely and German authorities are still investigating a potential motive,” the United States Secret Service told NBC News.
