Driver in Fatal 10 Freeway Crash Charged with Manslaughter

Federal authorities have issued an immigration detainer for Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old truck driver accused of causing a deadly eight-vehicle crash on the 10 Freeway in Ontario.

The crash, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in the deaths of three people, including former Pomona High School basketball coach Clarence Nelson and his wife, Lisa. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday that Singh faces three counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of DUI causing injury.

According to ABC7, Singh allegedly drove a semi-truck at high speed into stopped traffic, causing a chain-reaction crash. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Singh, originally from India, entered the United States illegally in 2022. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has requested that Singh be held for up to 48 hours beyond his scheduled release to allow federal officers to take him into custody.

The crash also involved four commercial big rigs and four other vehicles, leaving four people hospitalized. Singh is currently held without bail due to being considered a flight risk. He is expected to be arraigned on all charges at the Rancho Cucamonga Superior Courthouse on Friday, as reported by NBC Los Angeles.

The incident has sparked discussions about immigration policies, with DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticizing current border policies. Meanwhile, East Bay Times reported that Singh had a valid commercial driver’s license, which was federally approved, allowing him to operate a semi-truck.
