Dozens Shot In Chicago Over The Weekend

At least 33 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, with six fatalities, as reported by police. One of the most significant incidents occurred late Friday night (June 19) on the city’s South Side, where a drive-by shooting left 13 people injured. According to The Guardian, two gunmen in an SUV opened fire on a crowd, hitting 12 people aged 17 to 47. Two victims, both male, remain in critical condition.

The Chicago Police responded to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire. They found a woman with two gunshot wounds and a man with four graze wounds, both of whom are in fair condition. Another man refused medical treatment despite sustaining injuries. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.

The shootings occurred on Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the U.S. Earlier in the day, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama opened the Obama Presidential Center on the South Side, less than five miles from the shooting scene. Pastor Donovan Price, a local advocate, expressed his dismay at the violence on such a significant day, stating, “It should be celebrating. Fireworks should not turn into gunshots.”

USA Today reported that the city’s mayor, Brandon Johnson, had urged residents to prioritize safety over the holiday weekend. The police continue to investigate the incidents, seeking any leads on the perpetrators.
