Dozens Of Deaths Blamed On The Heat

At least 25 deaths are attributed to the extreme heat wave gripping much of the United States. Over 150 million Americans across the eastern U.S. experienced record-setting temperatures on the Fourth of July, with heat alerts stretching from the Midwest to the Deep South and Northeast. In Washington, D.C., National Guard members rendered aid to heat victims attending the America 250 festivities. The intense heat also contributed to massive thunderstorms, causing gusty winds, large hail, and power outages, leading to postponed fireworks displays.

The heat wave, described as a “heat dome,” has resulted in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees in cities like Washington, D.C., Norfolk, Virginia, and Raleigh, North Carolina. NBC News reported that emergency workers were actively assisting attendees at the National Mall, where temperatures reached dangerous levels. In New Jersey, the death toll rose to 22, with fatalities occurring primarily in central and northern counties.

FOX Weather noted that cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., have activated heat response plans, including opening cooling centers and extending pool hours. The heat index in these areas reached up to 115 degrees, prompting officials to urge residents to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities.

The heat wave also led to power outages affecting over 1.3 million customers across states from Oklahoma to Connecticut. The National Weather Service predicts some relief as cooler air moves in, but warns that dangerous overnight warmth and high humidity will continue to pose risks.

USA Today reported that several Fourth of July events were canceled or postponed due to the heat. In Maryland, the City of Takoma Park canceled its July 4 parade, and in Philadelphia, the America 250 parade was also called off. Officials continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to take precautions against the heat.
