At least 21 people in the state of Kentucky were killed in severe weather, which included suspected tornadoes, late Friday (May 16) night into Saturday (May 17) morning. The total is seven more than the 14 initially reported in Kentucky, while at least five more were killed in Missouri.

At least 21 people were killed and dozens more injured after severe weather, which included suspected tornadoes, hit parts of Missouri and Kentucky late Friday (May 16) night into Saturday (May 17) morning, authorities announced via NBC News.

At least 14 people died in Kentucky and the total is expected to grow, Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed on his X account Saturday morning.

“Kentucky, we’re starting today with the tough news that we lost at least 14 of our people to last night’s storms, but sadly, this number is expected to grow as we receive more information. Please pray for all of our affected families,” Beshear wrote.

Sheriff John Root reported “numerous severe injuries” in Laurel County after a tornado touched down late Friday night and a search for survivors was ongoing as of Saturday morning.

At least five people in Missouri were killed in St. Louis County and two more in Scott County, officials confirmed via NBC News. At least 38 others were reported to be injured in St. Louis, a total that’s expected to increase, Mayor Cara Spencer confirmed during a news briefing Saturday morning.

“Our inspectors are out there making sure that we are, first and foremost, assessing the damage to be condemning buildings, and moving through demolition and other security as we go through this,” Spencer said via NBC News.
