A devastating fire at a bar in the Swiss Alps resort of Crans-Montana claimed the lives of at least 40 people and injured over 100 others during a New Year’s Eve celebration. Valais canton police commander Frédéric Gisler described the incident as an “unprecedented tragedy” and warned that the death toll might increase as many of the injured remain in critical condition.
The blaze broke out at Le Constellation bar shortly after midnight on Thursday (January 1), turning a festive occasion into a scene of chaos and panic. Witnesses reported seeing waitresses carrying champagne bottles with sparklers, which may have ignited the fire. However, authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause, and an investigation is underway to determine if safety standards were upheld. Valais canton Attorney General Béatrice Pilloud stated that it was too early to determine the fire’s origin.
Crans-Montana, known for its scenic views and as a premier ski destination, is now mourning the loss of life. The Swiss government has declared five days of mourning. The fire has drawn condolences from around the world, including messages from Egypt, Oman, and Jordan, as well as the United Kingdom’s King Charles III, who expressed his sympathy for the victims and their families.
The tragedy has also affected foreign nationals, with several Italians among the injured and missing. Efforts are ongoing to identify the victims and inform their families, a process that could take several days. As the investigation continues, the community and families of the victims are left grappling with the aftermath of one of Switzerland’s worst disasters in recent history.
