Former President Donald Trump held a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Thursday (August 8), marking his first public appearance since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee. The conference was announced on Trump’s Truth Social network, where he expressed his eagerness to debate Harris.
Trump said his campaign “hasn’t recalibrated strategy at all” since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee.
Trump said that Harris is “weak on crime” and supports “open borders.”
“I think she’s worse than Biden,” Trump said.
Trump’s press conference comes amid a surge in support for Harris, who recently selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. The former president has been critical of Harris’s media presence, or lack thereof since she became the Democratic nominee. He has also expressed his intent to expose Harris during the upcoming presidential debates, stating on Truth Social, “I will expose Kamala during the Debate the same way I exposed Crooked Joe, Hillary, and everyone else during Debates. Only I think Kamala will be easier.”
Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, has also criticized Harris for not holding a news conference or sitting down for interviews since Biden stepped aside from his presidential reelection campaign and she launched her White House campaign. Harris sometimes answers shouted questions while boarding or leaving her plane for campaign stops.
The former president said he has agreed to several presidential debates against Harris on different television networks: Fox News on September 4, NBC News on September 10, and ABC on September 25.
“They may or may not agree. I don’t know if they’re going to agree. She hasn’t done an interview. She can’t do an interview. She’s barely competent, and she can’t do an interview, but I look forward to the debates because I think we have to set the record straight,” Trump said.
Trump’s press conference is seen by some as an attempt to regain media attention and stem Harris’s rising popularity. Stephanie Grisham, a former Trump spokeswoman turned critic, suggested that Trump is “panicking” over the rise of Harris and believes that only he can fix his campaign’s perceived failures.
