An upside-down U.S. flag has been hung from a granite wall at Donner Summit near Truckee, California. The flag, which is considered a distress signal, was placed at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet in Tahoe National Forest. Local residents speculate that rock climbers may have affixed the flag to the east-facing wall.
The flag is not visible from Interstate 80, but it can be easily seen from Donner Pass Road. This route is popular among local bicyclists, skiers, hikers, and climbers, making the flag a noticeable sight for those traveling through the area.
As of now, the identity of those who placed the flag remains unknown, and there has been no official statement regarding its purpose or message.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, several residents of Truckee feel like they understand it’s meaning. Eric Perlman, one of the residents said,
“I think it’s completely appropriate because America is in a state of grave distress and needs help from any and all quadrants.”
