Diane Keaton Dies at Age 79; Starred in `Annie Hall,’ `Godfather’ Films

LOS ANGELES – Academy Award–winning actress Diane Keaton, the eccentric and beloved star of Annie Hall, The Godfather films, and Something’s Gotta Give, has died at the age of 79, according to multiple reports.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed they responded to Keaton’s Brentwood home around 8 a.m. Sunday and transported a 79-year-old woman to a local hospital. People magazine later confirmed that woman was Keaton.

Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton’s career spanned more than five decades. She made her Broadway debut in Hair and earned a Tony nomination for Play It Again, Sam, before breaking out on the big screen as Kay Adams in The Godfather.

Her partnership with Woody Allen defined 1970s cinema, with standout performances in Sleeper, Love and Death, Manhattan, and the film that made her a household name—Annie Hall. Her quirky style and effortless charm on screen earned her an Oscar for Best Actress and cemented her status as one of Hollywood’s most original stars.

Keaton continued to shine in hits like Reds, Baby Boom, Father of the Bride, and The First Wives Club, often portraying strong, funny, and relatable women. In later years, she found renewed acclaim with Something’s Gotta Give and Book Club.

Off-screen, Keaton was known for her wit, her advocacy for historic preservation in Los Angeles, and her distinctive personal style.

She dated her three most high-profile co-stars, seeing Allen, Pacino, and Beatty at various times, but ultimately remained single for her entire life.

She once told People magazine, I’m really glad I didn’t get married. I’m an oddball… I don’t want to be a wife.”

Diane Keaton leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances, timeless humor, and a singular voice that helped redefine what it means to be a leading woman in Hollywood.
