DHS Subpoenas California’s Immigrant Aid Program

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued subpoenas to California’s Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration. The subpoenas, issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations office in Los Angeles, aim to uncover whether individuals in the United States illegally received benefits from the Social Security Administration dating back to 2021.

CAPI provides cash assistance to aged, blind, and disabled legal immigrants who are ineligible for federal Supplemental Security Income due to their immigration status. However, the DHS suspects that some ineligible individuals may have received these benefits. According to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, “Radical left politicians in California prioritize illegal aliens over our own citizens, including by giving illegal aliens access to cash benefits.”

The subpoenas demand records from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services, including names, dates of birth, and immigration statuses of CAPI applicants. Secretary Noem emphasized that this is just the beginning of the investigation. Fox News reports that the investigation follows a study by the Economic Policy Innovation Center, which claimed California used federal funds to support illegal immigrants’ healthcare and other initiatives.

The DHS’s actions align with President Donald Trump’s recent memorandum aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from obtaining Social Security benefits. The investigation is expected to expand beyond Los Angeles County as the DHS seeks to ensure taxpayer dollars are not misused.
