Democrats’ Lead Dwindles In Swing State As Voters Switch Party Registration

The Democratic Party is witnessing a significant shift in party affiliations in several key swing states. According to state voter registration data from Pennsylvania, Democrats are changing their party affiliation at more than twice the rate of Republicans. As of Monday (October 21), the state had 3,971,607 registered Democrats and 3,673,783 registered Republicans, with over 1.4 million voters registered as third-party or independent voters. However, the Democratic Party’s advantage over Republicans has been dwindling this year.

In 2020, Democrats had a larger margin of registered voters compared to Republicans, at 4.2 million to 3.5 million. This year, the GOP has reduced that lead to a 297,824 margin. Comparing registered voters this election year to 2020, Democrats face a net loss of 257,281 voters, while Republicans have a net gain of 428,537 registered voters.

According to Fox News, more than double the number of previously registered Democrats changed their party affiliation this cycle compared to the number of registered Republicans who left the party.

Newsweek reports that in 2023, 19,321 Pennsylvania voters changed their registration from Democrat to “other,” and 36,341 switched from Democrat to Republican. This year, 51,937 registered Democrats changed their affiliation to “other,” and 61,126 switched to Republican, for a total of 113,063 leaving the party.

The shift in voter registration could have significant implications for the upcoming elections, as Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes could determine the winner in the razor-thin race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Other states showing an increasing number of Democrats switching parties ahead of the election include North Carolina and Nevada.
