Death Toll Rises; More Than 800,000 Still Without Power In Winter Storms

At least 18 people have died and more than 800,000 power outages were still reported on Monday (January 26) amid a massive winter storm combining snow, ice and freezing temperatures.

The 18 casualties reported across multiple states included a 16-year-old girl in Frisco, Texas; a 17-year-old boy in Arkansas; one person in Austin, Texas; three people in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, ranging from ages 60 to 84; five people in New York City; one woman in Massachusetts; three people from Tennessee; two people from Louisiana; and one person from Kansas, ABC News reports. A total 811,143 U.S. customers were reported to be without power as of 9:30 a.m. ET, which included 250,536 in Tennessee, the most of any state, followed by Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina, according to Poweroutage.us.

Nashville Electric Service, which had more outages than any electric company in the entire United States, issued a statement claiming the event “peaked at 230,000 outages,” which was its highest number since derecho windstorms in May 2020. At least 22 states have already issued emergency disaster declarations including Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Washington, D.C.

“It is rare that storms combine this much snow, ice and bitter cold over such a large area — a widespread travel-halting winter storm will stall daily life for days in large portions of the central and eastern U.S.,” said Evan Myers of AccuWeather.
