Death Toll Rises Again Amid Recovery Efforts For Rounds Of US Tornadoes

At least 19 people were killed after another round of tornadoes and other severe weather hit the United States on Saturday (April 5) as some areas begin to launch recovery efforts, NBC News reported in an update on Sunday (April 6).

A majority 10 deaths were reported in Tennessee, while others were reported in Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Georgia. Severe storms produced strong winds, large hail and multiple tornadoes spanning from the lower Ohio Valley to the lower middle Mississippi Valleys on Saturday.

The severe weather threats shifted eastward on Sunday into the Central and Southern Appalachian Mountains and the Southeast, which included areas between eastern Louisiana and eastern Tennessee, as well as Little Rock, Arkansas; Atlanta, Georgia; and Indianapolis, Indiana. The severe storms occurred days after the same region was hit by overnight severe weather that led to at least 16 deaths on April 3.

“After days of severe weather and flooding, our county is finally catching its breath,” the Pulaski County government in Arkansas said in a statement obtained by NBC News. “Cleanup efforts are in full swing.

Officials in Tennessee confirmed that a “Crisis Cleanup” was activated in the state on Sunday, with curious residents urged not to enter damaged buildings and drivers advised to avoid hazards while facing flooded roadways. An estimated 80,000 customers in the Midwest and South were reported to have still been without power Sunday evening, according to PowerOutage.us.

More than 4,000 flights lying into, out of or within the U.S. regions affected were delayed and 147 were canceled as of Sunday night, the majority of which were out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.com.
