Death Toll From Dominican Night Club Roof Collapse Rises To 225

The death toll from the tragic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has risen to 225 after four more victims succumbed to their injuries overnight. The disaster occurred early Tuesday (April 8) during a merengue concert, where the roof suddenly gave way, sending debris crashing down on attendees, including prominent figures from politics, sports, and fashion.

Officials said that 189 people were rescued alive from the rubble, but more than 200 were injured, with 15 still hospitalized, including five in critical condition. The identification of victims has been challenging, with many requiring biometric data to confirm their identities. Among those confirmed dead are former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, and Nelsy Cruz, the brother of seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but authorities have launched an investigation into the nightclub’s safety protocols.

On Thursday, President Luis Abinader and First Lady Raquel Arbaje attended a memorial service for singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing on stage when the roof collapsed. Mourners gathered at the National Theater, where a recording of Pérez singing the national anthem played, creating a poignant moment of shared grief.
