DA Seeks Delay Before Menendez Brothers’ Resentencing Hearing

Hours before Erik and Lyle Menendez’s critical resentencing hearing on Thursday (April 17), the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office requested a delay. The brothers, convicted for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, have been in prison for 35 years. They are currently serving life sentences without parole.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman filed the motion on Wednesday, asking the court to review a comprehensive risk assessment completed by the California Board of Parole Hearings. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered this assessment to determine if the brothers pose a public safety risk. According to Fox News, the assessment is set to be completed by June 13, 2025.

The brothers’ resentencing hearing, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. local time, could potentially bring them closer to freedom. However, Hochman argues that the court should have all available information before making any decisions. As reported by ABC News, Hochman has expressed skepticism about the brothers’ claims of self-defense and their lack of responsibility for their actions.

Supporters of the Menendez brothers, including over 20 relatives, argue they have changed and are remorseful. According to KTLA, the brothers’ attorney, Mark Geragos, has pushed back against Hochman’s claims, emphasizing their rehabilitation efforts.

The court’s decision on the delay remains uncertain, and the brothers await the judge’s ruling on their potential path to freedom.
