Couple Caught Dumping Kittens in San Bernardino Heat

A couple was caught on video abandoning a cage full of kittens in San Bernardino on Friday as temperatures soared to triple digits. Elisabeth Lomeli, who witnessed the incident, recorded the couple near East 40th and Harrison streets. Lomeli told KTLA, “That’s not humane. Imagine yourself sitting out there with no water, no shade.”

The video shows the female suspect tipping the cage to release four six-week-old kittens and an adult cat, believed to be their mother. Lomeli and her friend, Kossondra Villasenor, confronted the couple, who claimed that local shelters would not accept the cats. The confrontation turned heated, with Villasenor accusing the couple of inhumane behavior.

Lomeli decided to take the kittens, but the mother cat escaped. The kittens are now in the care of an out-of-state rescue shelter, while local organization Cats of San Bernardino continues to search for the missing mother cat. Jaina Spagis, director of the organization, stated, “We’ve been going on foot, using a drone, passing out flyers.”

Kris Watson, Director of San Bernardino City Animal Shelter, reminded the public that abandoning animals is illegal and can lead to severe penalties. The San Bernardino Police Department has launched a criminal investigation into the incident.
