If you have been borrowing a friend’s Costco membership card to go shopping, you may soon have to purchase a membership of your own. Going forward, guests will have to be accompanied by the owner of the membership.
To enforce the policy, Costco said it will start requiring shoppers to scan their cards at the door instead of just flashing them to a door attendant and rechecking them at the cash register.
“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse,” Costco said in a statement. “Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.”
In addition, if the membership card doesn’t have a photograph on it, you may be asked to show a valid photo ID to enter the store.
The new policy comes after the company added scanning machines at the entrance to some stores, requiring members to scan their cards instead of quickly showing them to an employee as they walked in.
Membership fees are a major source of revenue for the company. In 2023, Costco earned $4.6 billion in revenue from the fees, according to CNN.
