Costa Mesa Police Seek Help Catching Hit-Run Driver

COSTA MESA (CNS) – Costa Mesa police asked for the public’s help today tracking down a hit-and-run driver who killed a man in a wheelchair.

Police were called about 11:30 p.m. Thursday to Newport Boulevard and Industrial Way about the hit-and-run collision, according to Roxi Fyad of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

The victim — Richard Smith, 50, of Newport Beach — was knocked out of his wheelchair, Fyad said. Smith was taken to a hospital, where he later died, she said.

Police were looking for a 2009-2010 black Toyota Highlander that investigators suspect has front-end damage, Fyad said.

Anyone with surveillance video or who witnessed the collision were asked to contact police traffic investigator Luis Gomez at 714-754-5264.
