Convicted Murderer Serving Life Sentence Mistakenly Released From Jail

Kathan Guzman, a convicted murderer, was captured in Ocoee, Florida, after being mistakenly released from a Georgia jail. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed his arrest on Friday (April 11). Guzman, 22, was apprehended without incident at his mother’s residence by the Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force and is now held in the Orange County Jail.

Guzman was convicted last year for the murder of his girlfriend, 19-year-old Delila Grayson, whom he strangled in August 2022. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. However, Guzman was erroneously released from Clayton County Jail on March 27 due to a paperwork error that overlooked his serious charges, including murder.

The error was discovered when the Georgia Office of Victim Services could not locate Guzman in the penal system, prompting Clayton County District Attorney Tasha Mosley‘s office to investigate. Mosley confirmed the erroneous release and expressed her hope that Guzman would serve his full sentence.

Grayson’s mother, Christina Grayson, expressed fear for her safety during the two weeks Guzman was at large, as she resides in Florida. She told WAGA, “It’s scary to know that someone could just be released because of a mistake.”

Guzman is expected to be extradited back to Georgia to continue serving his life sentence. This incident marks the second mistaken release from Clayton County Jail since last year, raising concerns about procedural errors within the facility.
