SAN PEDRO (CNS) – A container ship remained at an anchorage outside the Port of Los Angeles Wednesday after an electrical fire broke out aboard the vessel.
“Now that there is no active firefighting on-going, we can look forward to the next steps in bringing the ship back to the pier safely and removing the cargo in a controlled state at the approved facility,” U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Stacey Crecy said in a statement issued Tuesday regarding the container ship One Henry Hudson.
The blaze, which broke out around 6:30 p.m. Friday, was contained and active firefighting ended as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to Crecy.
After a waiting period to insure there is no re-ignition, “crews will conduct a stability analysis of the vessel to determine (if) it’s safe for transit back to the pier and the cargo can be offloaded,” Crecy said.
Mitigating measures were employed because crews could not open the containers to see if the fire is completely out.
A salvage group, along with local partners, is formulating a plan to return the ship to port.
The Coast Guard reported that no firefighting water was discharged from the One Henry Hudson,
Air quality continues to be monitored and the Coast Guard and Port of Los Angeles Police Department are enforcing a safety zone around the 1,000-foot ship, while a temporary flight restriction remains in place.
The Coast Guard and National Safety Transportation Board are investigating the cause of the fire.
While the fire was active, Los Angeles Fire Department HazMat teams monitored air quality as suppression efforts continued in the ship’s sub- levels, where access was difficult.
A shelter-in-place order was issued north of Point Fermin, between South Western Avenue and State Route 103 for both San Pedro and nearby Wilmington, the LAFD reported.
“If you can smell it, you’re going to want to stay indoors,” LAFD Captain Adam Van Gerpen said.
The order was lifted Saturday morning.
The Coast Guard reported Tuesday that air quality levels were within normal ranges in the Wilmington, San Pedro and coastal areas.
The Port reopened for business Saturday after community shelter-in- place orders and work restrictions were lifted and all lanes of the nearby Seaside (47) Freeway between Gaffney Street and Ocean Boulevard in San Pedro reopened.
