Coca-Cola To Launch Version Of Signature Drink With Major Change

The Coca-Cola company announced it will launch a version of its signature beverage made with U.S. sugar cane in a news release shared on Tuesday (July 22).

“As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range,” the company said.

Coca-Cola typically sweetens its signature drink with corn syrup for the United States market and uses cane sugar in Mexico and some European countries, selling the cane sugar beverage as the imported “Mexican Coke” in the U.S. The U.S. cane sugar option will be added to the company’s existing U.S. product line.

Coca-Cola’s confirmation came days after President Donald Trump claimed that he had “been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so” in a post shared on his Truth Social account. The company didn’t initially confirm the report, instead telling NBC News that it appreciated the president’s “enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand” but specified that “details…will be shared soon” at the time.

“This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better,” Trump wrote about the reported change prior to Coca Cola’s confirmation.

Trump administration Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pushed for food companies to alter formulations and remove ingredients such as artificial dyes as part of his ‘Make America Healthy Again’ initiative, though the health impact of cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup is essentially the same, Dr. Darius Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and director of the Food is Medicine Institute at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, told NBC News.
